A mother’s journey with addiction recovery

Lynda Araoz is the author of book “The Weight of a Feather: A Mothers Journey Through the Opiate Addiction Crisis”. Lynda wrote the book after her son was in active drug addiction and found recovery she said she would not live her life knowing millions of other people around the world were going through what she was, and she wanted to share her story to help others find recovery from addiction like her son did. Lynda’s goal was to reduce the stigma of addiction and help others find hope.

Talk Recovey radio, addiction recovery radio showLynda said her, and her son always had a good relationship and always spoke openly together and honestly. His drug addiction started with using pot then going on to heroine and being on and off suboxone and methadone for a while. Lynda speaks about how he was a prisoner of drugs and addiction and every so on he would say to her, I don’t want to live like this I don’t want to treat you like this and that’s when Lynda thought they were at a starting point of him going into recovery.

Lynda’s son’s journey of recovery from addiction started with counselling and detox when he was still in high school, she mentioned that when her son went to detox he did not have a big commitment to recovery he just thought he would give it a shot. Once he finished detox he went to a sober living home which was some what structured. Lynda speaks about how what helped her son was a peer support program and how her son was recovering from addiction with people his age and was able to do healthy activities that did not involve drugs and alcohol.

Lynda shared a story in her sons journey of trying to escape addiction of her sitting in a chair thinking about her son’s journey and she had a really hard time trying to think of a happy ending to her son’s journey and she completely lost hope. A main thing Lynda had to learn on her son’s journey getting clean is to set boundaries with compassion.
