Author Tj Woodward, Conscious Recovery.
Conscious Recovery is a groundbreaking and effective approach to viewing and treating addiction that can transform your life. Author and spiritual teacher TJ Woodward is changing the conversation about addiction because he recognizes that underneath all addictive behavior is an Essential Self that is whole and perfect.
Author and spiritual teacher T.J. Woodward talks about his book Conscious recovery. Conscious recovery started with a question, “what would happen if I see the person I’m working with not through the lens of brokenness but through the lens of moments of perfection, through that spiritual lens of wholeness”. That question has had a profound impact on my work and how I see clients recovering and the positive effect its had on them. Conscious recovery operates under knowing each one of us has within ourselves the innate ability to heal self.
The lens of thinking, there’s something broken and needs to be fixed, how would that perception change if we see this person as whole and perfect. So how I can help someone dive into the unconscious believes that are driving their show, that are unconsciously creating their life. I think we can say, the big healing comes from within. In good conscious recovery I’ve come up with the deeper root causes of addictive behavior because what I notice is a lot of treatment modalities focus on symptoms and behaviors rather than getting down to some of the deeper root causes.
I became a spiritual teacher through a ministerial program at Unity Institute and then ultimately became a new minister and now I’m affiliated. Four years ago, I started an LGBT track as well. What I’ve experienced with LGBT community is there’s so much shame so much disconnection that addiction rates are much higher. I think one of the driving forces of my addictive behavior was feeling separate and feeling so much shame from my unresolved trauma. My trauma had not been worked through and a lot of my trauma, not all of it was related to being a gay man growing up in Indiana in the 1970s. Recovery isn’t ever about blame it’s about recognizing what happened and the impact that has had.
Root Causes of Addiction
My book is divided into three parts, the root causes of addiction, breaking the cycle of addiction and then a return to wholeness again operating under the knowing that there’s still the essential self underneath all this behavior. That’s what I mean by spiritual connection, it is reconnecting with that essential self. Getting rid of the beliefs that prevent a person from returning to a place of wholeness. This is about learning and returning to that place of wholeness.
